Although Manly-Warringah dominated the season, winning 22 of 26 matches, the one-off of a Grand Final saw Parramatta, who lost four more home-and-away matches, and 19-10 to Manly in the semi-final, overturned it in the SCG finale, 18-6. It was the western Sydney club's third title in a row, while Manly's second straight loss to them after losing 21-8 in the 1982 Grand Final.
 
This season was the last in the league for Newtown, who were ejected from the league due to financial problems, bringing an end to a 75 year run in the top level competition. 1983 was also the first season of the four point try.
