This set uses the "hybrid" set rule amendments. All 12 men's and 6 women's teams that played in the tournament are included.
 
In the men's tournament, Pakistan won their third (and final, to date) Olympic gold medal, beating West Germany 2-1 after extra time. Great Britain would beat their rivals Australia 3-2 for the bronze medal.
 
In the women's tournament, a round-robin was played with the Netherlands taking the gold medal with only one dropped point in their five matches. West Germany took a second silver, with the United States beating Australia in a penalty stroke contest after both teams finished with identical records.
