The inaugural professional club league in the Southern Hemisphere saw twelve teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa compete, and all twelve teams have split team ratings for home and away games.
Following the round-robin regular season, all three nations had at least one team qualify for the semi-finals, but table-toppers Queensland of Australia lost to South Africa's Natal leaving New Zealanders Auckland to claim a home final with a win over Northern Transvaal and then claim the first trophy with a comprehensive 45-21 win over Natal in the final.
