Please note that some ratings have been estimated, and only players who scored at least one try are included on the team cards due to lack of information. This set also uses an era-specific double range for drop goals, and two sets of control charts – one for home-and-away matches, and one for matches played at a neutral venue.

Like in the previous competition, 20 teams qualified although the pool stage was changed into five pools of four teams where each team would play each other home-and-away, and for the first and only time, wildcard playoffs would decide the final qualifying teams for the knockout round.

Defending champions Brive would again make the final, although only after beating Toulouse in a game drawn after extra time by the number of tries scored in that match. Three French teams would make the semis, but it was again England vs France as Bath edged past Pau in the other semi-final. In a tight finish, Jonathan Callard kicked what proved the winning penalty to give Bath a 19-18 win.
