The first classic set contains 103 men's jumpers (the women would have to wait a decade longer for their own World Cup) in the Olympic season ahead of the Games in Salt Lake City. Please note that this set does not contain an optional chart to apply modified gate/wind compensation results as this wouldn't be implemented until the end of the decade, so all distances on the season-specific chart are actual distances jumped.

Pole Adam Malysz would win six times before Christmas on the way to retaining the World Cup title, but German Sven Hannawald would become the first jumper in history to claim a grand slam of all four competitions in the Four Hills Tournament. However at the Olympics, Switzerland's Simon Ammann claimed both individual golds winning both the normal hill and large hill competitions.

Hannawald would also become Ski Flying World Champion in Harrachov in a competition shortened to two rounds due to the second day being wiped out by bad weather, and in a packed season Finn Matti Hautamaeki won two of the four tournament stops as he claimed the Nordic Tournament title.
