A historic season with all six interstate teams making the finals series for the first - and so far, only - time that all interstate teams have (and nearly impossible today with eight teams). Port Adelaide were the clear minor premiers, with 18 wins, three ahead of Collingwood, who were two points ahead of Brisbane in third. It was the South Australian club's second minor premiership in a row.

But fourth placed Sydney shocked them at home in the opening week of the finals, and although they would beat the only other Victorian finals club, Essendon, that loss meant they would have to travel to Melbourne to face Collingwood in the preliminary final, where the locals were massive 44 point winners to dash Port Adelaide's hopes of a first title.

Reigning premiership winners Brisbane would make it to the Grand Final again, despite losing to Collingwood in week one of the finals. A 42 point win over Adelaide was followed by a 44 point victory in Sydney in the prelim.

And they would lead by 42 points at half-time in the Grand Final, blowing away Collingwood's thoughts of a first title since 1990, with Brisbane's third premiership in a row comfortably coming by 50 points at the final siren.
