This set contains all 12 men's and 12 women's teams that played in the tournament, with goal scorers (and extra scorers) lists, and the simplified play module ratings for quick play. Please be aware that this competition was prior to the shootout, so any elimination games that ended in a draw after 70 minutes would play extra time and then penalty strokes if no goals were scored, and so for this use the "Two Halves Rule" in the rulebook.

The men's tournament saw Australia become a new gold medalist nation, when Jamie Dwyer scored a golden goal winner as they came from behind to beat the two-time defending champions Netherlands, 2-1. The two teams had played a preliminary round match where again the Dutch led, but this time held on for a 2-1 win. The bronze went to Germany with another golden goal winner, beating Spain 4-3.

And there was a new champion too in the women's tournament, with Germany first sneaking into the semi-finals with two wins and two losses, then beating China on penalty strokes after a 0-0 semi-final, before they held on to beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the final. After losing to the Dutch on penalty strokes in their semi-final, Argentina slipped back to bronze with a late goal beating China 1-0.

With their lack of field hockey playing in Greece, this was a rare occasion where the hosts were not entered in either division.
