12 years after their historic win on home soil, South Africa became World Champions for the second time as they defeated defending champions England 15-6 in a tryless final in Saint-Denis. The winners had already shutout England 36-0 in the pool stage. Argentina were a historic third, vaulting themselves into the Southern Country Tournament in the coming years, with twice defeating the hosts France – firstly in the opening game of the tournament 17-12, before repeating it in the third-place playoff 34-10.
