All 24 teams (12 men and 12 women) who took part in the 2008 Olympic field hockey tournament, now including simplified play module ratings. Please be aware that this competition was prior to the shootout, so any elimination games that ended in a draw after 70 minutes would play extra time and then penalty strokes if no goals were scored, and so for this use the "Two Halves Rule" in the rulebook.

In the men's competition, Germany would win the first of back-to-back golds by beating Spain, with Australia, who scored 32 goals in seven games, having to settle for bronze after losing to the Spanish in the semi-final.

In the women's competition, the Netherlands would also win the first of consecutive golds with a win over the hosts China, who claimed their first medal in field hockey, four years after finishing fourth in Athens. Argentina beat Germany for bronze.
