The hosts suffered a humiliating first round exit, one that had been decided after just three group matches. Following a late Wales comeback where they scored ten points in the final ten minutes to claim a famous 28-25 win over their rivals, England were then swept aside and out of the tournament with a one-sided 33-13 loss to Australia.

The biggest shock of the group stage occurred when Japan claimed a stirring 34-32 victory over South Africa. However, they struggled to score tries with only nine in their four matches, and after being unable to back up the win against Scotland were they were swept aside 45-10, they ended up being eliminated by the pair, albeit by the Scottish only through hanging on in the final minutes to defeat Samoa 36-33.

Defending champions New Zealand put out a stunning 62-13 demolition of France in the quarter-finals, and then won a tense semi-final over South Africa 20-18. They would meet Australia in the final, who had won a controversial quarter-final against Scotland 35-34, before defeating Argentina 29-15 in the semi-final, as all four nations of the Southern 4-Country Tournament made it to the final stage for the first time at the same World Cup.

In the final it took the Kiwis time to get going, leading only 9-3 coming up to half-time, however a try on both sides of the interval, broke the match open. Although the Aussies did score two tries in the second half, New Zealand retained the trophy for their third World Cup with a 34-17 victory. South Africa would win the third place playoff with a 24-13 win over Argentina.
