Norwegian Johannes Thingnes Boe took his first overall World Cup title, ending Martin Fourcade's seven-year stranglehold. He also claimed the Sprint World Championship, with the other victors German Arnd Peiffer in the Individual, and first World Championships for Dominik Windisch of Italy in the Mass Start and Ukrainian Dmytro Pidruchnyi in the Pursuit.
Dorothea Wierer became the first Italian to win the women's overall trophy with Lisa Vittozzi completing a one-two for the country. Wierer also won one World Championship - the Mass Start - with Slovakian Anastasiya Kuzmina winning the Sprint, Hanna Oeberg of Sweden the Individual, and Denise Herrmann of Germany the Pursuit. All four women were first time World Champions.
