Tasman retained their title with a 13-12 win over Auckland in the Premiership final, with a tight-run thing at the bottom of the table to avoid relegation only completed on the last day of the round robin with North Harbour dropping to the Championship. That was despite all seven teams at least winning half of their matches and only nine points separating them at the end of the ten match season. They will be replaced by Hawke's Bay after they saw off Northland 36-24 in the Championship final.
The Challenge Shield started in the hands of Canterbury, but after a shock loss to Taranaki – in a season where they flirted with an historic relegation until the final day – it saw the Shield switch hands in three successive matches, with Otago and Hawke's Bay both claiming ownership. Three successive defences, including lastly against Premiership Wellington, saw Hawke's Bay end the year with the Shield in their hands.
