After winning their first-ever Olympic medal in any sport five years earlier in Rio de Janeiro, Fiji repeated their men's tournament gold when they blitzed past their long-time rivals New Zealand with a 27-12 win in the final. Argentina claimed a historic first medal when they edged out Great Britain 17-12 in the bronze medal match.
 
In the women's tournament, New Zealand put to bed their shock loss to Australia in 2016 with a 26-12 win over surprise finalists France, who still claimed their first rugby sevens medal. There was even more of a surprise in the bronze medal match, as Fiji claimed a second medal in the sport with a 21-12 victory over Great Britain, who again came fourth, the same as in Rio.
