The four South African Southern Club League sides joined the 12 European clubs from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales for the first time. Although a stilted start due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, including a full tour of  four European club sides being halted and the clubs returned home due to new entry restrictions, three of the clubs - Western Province, Northern Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal made the top five places, with Irish sides Leinster, Ulster and Munster rounding out the top six, with the Scottish duo of Edinburgh and Glasgow rounding out the playoff qualifiers.

The semis were both Irish versus South African affairs and the big shock was Northern Gauteng going to Dublin to end Leinster's hopes of a fifth straight title, 27-26 (albeit the home side scored a converted try with the clock in the red to leave the score that close). It was a late converted try that saw it become an all-South African final at the first time of asking as Western Province beat Ulster 17-15 in the other semi.

Staying home in Cape Town, they fell behind to an early converted try, but Western Province came through to claim their first 5-Country League title, defeating Northern Gauteng 18-13 in the final.
