Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, many matches were either played behind closed doors or later in the season, all matches were shifted to Queensland – please check the schedule file for more details on how to handle these matches in terms of which ratings to use.
 
In a season that saw the whole league shifted to Queensland to complete it due to pandemic lockdowns in New South Wales (and later Victoria), 2020 champions Melbourne won 19 straight matches on the way to the minor premiership, tying the league's all-time single-season win streak record. 
 
However, after finishing second and then falling to South Sydney in the first week of the playoffs, Penrith edged Parramatta before winning the 2020 Grand Final rematch with Melbourne in the semi-final, 10-6. 
 
Souths had beaten Manly Warringah 36-16, but a late missed conversion proved the difference in the Grand Final, held for the first time ever in Brisbane, as Penrith became champions for the third time, 14-12.
