After arriving in South Africa, the tour was marred by COVID-19 with one tour match switched due to positive cases, and then when the tests rolled around, there was as much talking and controversy off the field as there was on it. All three tests would be played behind closed doors in Cape Town, with the tourists winning the opener 22-17. However, the hosts dominated the second test, winning 27-9, before edging the decider 19-16 as the South Africans dashed the tourists' hopes of repeating their 1997 series victory.
