Set notes

Due to a COVID-19 lockdown in Auckland, Auckland, Counties Manukau and North Harbour were unable to complete the season. As they each only played two matches, these three teams have extra try scorers included on the team cards.

Having won the past two championships, Tasman again made it to the final, however having to travel to Hamilton, Waikato would end their run as they claimed their first title since 2006. A late penalty goal from Fletcher Smith saw them to a 23-20 victory.

Due to Auckland-based teams being unable to complete the season due to a COVID-19 lockdown, no promotion and relegation took place. However, Taranaki were undefeated in winning the Championship. They won all eight regular season matches completed, then after beating a Southland team that only won once but still made the playoffs, they completed their 100% season by beating Otago 32-19.

The Challenge Shield started out with Hawke's Bay who had added to their three successful league defences by beating both their smaller provincial opponents during pre-season. They would also end the season with the Shield with a now nine match defence of it, including a 41-14 victory over eventual Premiership champions Waikato. Their closest defence was against Bay of Plenty, where they had to survive golden point extra time before closing out a 36-33 win.
