Whilst there were improvements from New Zealand and England, with the pair playing out a close semi-final with the Kiwis winning 20-6, Australia were once again too professional as they destroyed Papua New Guinea 82-0 in the semi, before defeating New Zealand 54-4 in the final. It is their third straight title as they evened up the overall wins with their Antipodean cousins.
 
There was also a historic first South American nation at a World Cup, with Brazil almost claiming an equally historic first point, before losing to a last minute try against Canada.
