The first nearly unaffected season since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw Geelong win their first premiership in 11 seasons as they topped the home-and-away season ladder with 18 wins, before a close win over Collingwood in the qualifying final was followed by massive wins firstly in the preliminary final against Brisbane (71 points), before an even wider margin against Sydney in the Grand Final (81 points), which also returned to its Melbourne home after two years on the road.

Melbourne, despite finishing second on the ladder - with the same number of wins as Sydney and Collingwood - were bounced from the finals with back-to-back losses to Sydney and Brisbane. At the lower end of the eight, Western Melbourne made it in by just 0.6 percentage points over Carlton.
