Despite an early season stutter that saw them lose two of their first three matches - including a historic loss in Fiji, Canterbury were once again able to come through and claim their 12th title and second in a row.

Because of their four losses, the top of the table honour was won by Waikato, who only lost the one time - surprisingly at home (albeit in New Plymouth, not Hamilton) against Queensland, who themselves only sneaked into the playoffs in eighth place.

The season was again dominated by the New Zealand clubs with Canterbury and Auckland coming second and third, and ACT again the best of Australia in fourth. There was a historic first qualification for Fiji, with that home victory over the champions eventually being the difference in getting them into the playoffs.

Their run came to an end in a reverse quarter-final match in Christchurch, which Canterbury dominated to win 49-8. ACT were the only non-New Zealand club to make the semis after a late victory over Wellington, but Waikato saw them off in Hamilton in a low-scoring game, 19-6. Canterbury meanwhile were ominously moving to the final with a 52-15 demolition over Auckland.

Waikato had won both their round robin matches and as the higher seed had the home advantage. But that made no difference, as Codie Taylor's second try won the match for the visitors and continued their long-term stranglehold over the trophy.
