Bordeaux Bègles became champions for the first time, and the fifth French club to lift the trophy, with a 28-20 win over Northampton in Cardiff. The club from the southwest of France had already eliminated the defending champions Toulouse in the semi-final 35-18, and won all eight matches on the way to this first crown.

Northampton had defeated the club with the second most titles Leinster in the semi-final, also denying a final with the two most successful clubs, but after that tight win, the English club were unable to collect their second title.
