Argentina's men again came top of the now reduced to only six tournaments regular season, but it was South Africa who became champions in Los Angeles, defeating Spain 19-5 in the final, after the Spanish beat the regular season winners in the semis. New Zealand also beat Argentina for bronze.
 
New Zealand's women again dominated, leading the regular season standings, and then winning at the World Championship, comfortably defeating their long-term rivals Australia, 31-7. Canada also beat their nearest rivals, and hosts, the United States for third place.
 
The United States, Kenya and Uruguay's men all kept their World Tour place in the qualifier, but Ireland were replaced by Germany, and the squad would be wound up by the Irish rugby board after the year to add to the downfall. For the women, the Irish women were also relegated, replaced by Kenya, while Brazil, Spain and China all survived.
