Ireland became back-to-back champions, but they missed out on the Grand Slam when a late Marcus Smith drop goal gave England a 23-22 win at Twickenham. The Irish would grind out the title a week later against Scotland, winning 17-13 for their 16th title.

After losing to the Irish comfortably in week one, and only just seeing off Scotland, France came through to finish second in what proved a tight and compelling championship. Italy had their best-ever tournament, after losing their first two matches as expected, they missed a late penalty to draw with France, then beat Scotland and Wales, which despite a 2-1-2 record, left them still ranked fifth. Wales lost all five matches to claim the wooden spoon for the first time since 2003.
