After losing their title to France in Tokyo, Denmark returned to the top step of the men's podium, racing into a nine goal lead by half-time, on the way to a demolition of Germany 39-26 in the gold medal game. Spain won a second straight, and fifth all-time bronze medal, edging out Slovenia 23-22, with their opponents claiming their best ever finish anyway. The hosts meanwhile lost in an extra time clash with the Germans in the quarter-final.
After falling to bronze in both Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo, Norway's women equalled Denmark's record of three golds, beating the defending champions and hosts, France, 29-21 in the final. Having not reached the last four since their last gold in 2004, the Danes lost to Norway by four goals in the semi-final, before winning the bronze medal, beating their fellow Scandinavian rivals Sweden, who still wait for their first medal at the Olympics, matching their fourth from three years ago.
