With the league no longer having automatic promotion to the top division, Ealing dominated the regular season again by winning all 26 regular round matches. But their run at the title came to a shocking end by the resurrected Worcester, winning 34-29 on the road in the semi-final. And the phoenix would complete its rise to the title, winning again on the road, 27-14, at Bedford in the final.
 
Cambridge were relegated after only drawing one match in their 26, and were joined by London SCO who lost the first relegation play-off  to Blackheath. Rotherham will also return to the second flight after winning the third tier's title.
