With the loss of Melbourne from the league, it was hoped Australian teams would be more competitive, however it was again only ACT who made it to the semi-finals.
After a convoluted playoff format, it was again two New Zealand teams in the final. Waikato had topped the table, but lost in the qualifying finals to defending champions Auckland, but the aforementioned defeat of the final Australian club still saw them into the big game.
They were joined by regular champions Canterbury, as they defeated Auckland in their semi-final. Being now able to host the final in Christchurch, the home team led 13-12 at half-time, then kept their opponents off the scoreboard in the second half, with Rivez Reihana's third penalty goal the only score of the second forty. It was a 13th title for the club from the South Island. However for Waikato, it was another lost season as they lost a third in a row, and are still looking for a first title since 2013.
