Italy completed a clean sweep of European, Olympic and World champions, and made their world record winning streak run to 36 matches. Although they were pushed to a fifth set in both their semi-final win over Brazil, and then in the final against Turkey. The Turkish were playing their first final, having guaranteed their first-ever medal when defeating Japan 3-1 in their semi-final. The Brazilians though survived a fifth set having been pulled back from 2-0 up to take third place over the Japanese.
Italy's world title was their first since their only previous win in 2002.
With this being the first expanded tournament, four countries appeared for the first time - Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Vietnam, with four more appearing for only their second. The hosts meanwhile made it to the round of 16 before losing to the eventual fourth placed Japan.
