Norway's women completed the sweep of European, Olympic and World champions at the same time, winning their fifth World title by defeating both hosts in the knockout round - first the Netherlands in the semi-final, before beating Germany 23-20 in the final.

Defending champions France saw their championship defence ended by the Germans in the semi-final, but claimed bronze with a 33-31 extra time win over the Dutch as they made it three medal finishes in the last three tournaments.
 
Egypt, Faroe Islands and Switzerland made their debut at this tournament, with the two European nations winning two matches each in the preliminary stage to make it to the main round.
