This set contains all 20 men's and 20 women's teams that qualified to the tournament held in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
There were new champions in both competitions, and both countries had never made the podium at a World Cup before their triumph. Spain men's best result was fourth back in 2016, but after making the semi-finals after losing two of their pool matches and having to go through the play-in round, they defeated fellow debutants at this stage in the semi-final in Germany, 21-15, and in the final Switzerland, 21-17 to become champions.
The Swiss had already dispatched the six-time champions Serbia in a demolition job 21-11 in their semi, but were unable to complete the job in the final, having to settle for a historic silver medal. The Serbians claimed a bronze medal this time, denying the Germans their first one, 21-16.
Netherlands women's best was also a fourth in 2017, but there was another shock finalist, hosts Mongolia, who had caused the biggest shock in the history of the competition, by beating the United States 18-15 in the quarter-final. It was a low-scoring final, with the Dutch outlasting the Mongolians 15-9 to lift the title for the first time, while the hosts had to settle for a historic silver medal.
Canada collected the bronze medal, bouncing back from a semi-final defeat to the Dutch, by beating Poland comfortably in the third place match, 21-9, as their opponents were unable to rebound after losing to the hosts in overtime - albeit it was still their best-ever finish.
