Canterbury retained their title, but not before Northland had reached their first ever final. In the end, the perennial contenders won 43-24.

The Challenge Shield started the year in Otago, but went north through Canterbury, before Northland took over by handing the eventual winners one of their two losses, 36-12. Their final defense of the year saw them lose it to Counties Manukau though, who held it in the last round, defeating Hawke's Bay 12-7.
