After dominating early championships, with four titles in the first five held, Sweden returned to the top of men's European handball, despite plenty of close shaves along the way.

They were almost eliminated in the preliminary round, drawing with Czech Republic 27-27 in their final game to sneak ahead of them in goal difference, after both sides had already lost to Spain. In the main round though, the Swedes won all four matches, including wins over Germany and by one goal, 24-23, to knock out rivals Norway.

In the semi-final, Sweden would come through again by a single goal to knock out Olympic champions France, 34-33, and would be joined by defending champions Spain after they defeated Denmark 29-25.

For the third match in a row, the Scandinavian country would come out on top by a single goal to lift the championship for the first time in 20 years, with a 27-26 victory to deny a third straight Euro for the Spaniards. The defending World champions Denmark claimed third with an extra time victory over the French 35-32.
